Last Chance to Save 216 Garden Plots, City Council Meeting 4-21

The Tuesday, April 21st Naperville City Council meeting is scheduled to include an agenda item on the potential relocation and development of a portion of the West Street Garden Plots and development of garden plots at DuPage River Park. The meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers of the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle Street. Plan to arrive at 6:50 in order to sign up to speak, and even if you do not wish to speak please come out in support of less costly and workable alternatives that accommodate the needs of the student and community athletes, without displacing 216 garden plots on West St.

At the January 8, 2009 Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners meeting the Park District Board accepted Naperville Community Unit School District 203's proposal to fund up to $500,000 for development of the Option 1A concept. Option 1A consists of the following:

-Development of two multi-purpose athletic fields, parking, landscaping and trail areas in the southern portion of the West Street Garden Plots.

-Relocation of approximately 216 garden plots from the southern portion of the West St. garden plots to locations in the northern garden plots area and DuPage River Park.

-Development of support amenities (i.e. water spigots, accessible plots, etc.) in the new northern plots.

-Grading in the northern plots to improve drainage and increase usable areas for gardening.

The Park District's acceptance of Option 1A is contingent upon Naperville City Council approval and the development of a mutually acceptable Intergovernmental Use Agreement between the Naperville Park District and School District 203. Since the January 8th meeting Park District and School District staff have worked with the City to develop a recommendation for City Council. The information provided to the City includes a recently completed Traffic Impact Analysis for the proposed West Street and DuPage River Park developments. A copy of the Traffic Impact Analysis is posted on the Park District website under the "Reports, FAQ's, Survey Results" link of the Garden Plots project webpage.
